The Michigan-based UFCW Local 951 was designed for the future taking sustainability into consideration from day one.  Benefits of the new Union Hall, which recieved LEED-NC certification include:  40% reduction in water usage, 50% of all construction waste diverted from landfill, 42% of project materials locally manufactured, daylight provided for 96% of al lndoor space.

Predating the LEED standard, Stop & Shop started working on ways to decrease thier energy usage in the 1990's.  This case study by Clean Air Cool Planet tells the story of the Foxboro, MA pilot store in which Stop and Shop was able to reduce energy costs - which are astronomical in grocery stores - by 30% and serve as a best practice for the chain, and its parent company Royal Ahold, moving forward.

This detailed case study reviews a point-by-point assessment of how Mass Maritime received a GOLD LEED certification for their new dorms on their Cape Cod campus.  The dorm is the first net-zero carbon emission dormitory on the planet.   PUBLISHER's NOTE:  Having been to this campus, it is truly a model in sustainability, with an enormous wind turbine, all outdoor lighting provided via solar panels, solar panels on all the dorms, etc.  The authors of this document note that the vast majority of the LEED points they received cost no additional dollars.  Very impressive example of committment and planning.

The new major league baseball stadium in Washington DC proves that good design and sustainability can go hand in hand.  The project has gained LEED Silver certification and resulted in 15% energy savings, 35% less water us and 83% of construction debris diverted from landfill.  Now they just need a good team.

This case study reviews the development of Toyota's new South Campus Headquarters, which was developed to consolidate several employee divisions into one area, reduce occupancy expenses, and provide future flexibility.  This LEED Gold certified project generated myriad benefits, including: $400,000+ in annual energy savings, 94% less potable water demand and 95% of construction waste diverted from landfill.

This Case Study overviews the development of America's first LEED certified US embassy, located in Sofia, Bulgaria.  The project has resulted in benefits including a 30% reduction in energy usage and a 21% reduction in water use.
