Now that miles-per-gallon is threatening to displace 0-60 as the key number for at least a certain segment of car buyers, what does fuel-economy really mean? Put another way—just how fuel-efficient is the new Prius, really?  That’s not part of the test (AP)
According to current Japanese fuel-economy tests, the 2010 Toyota Prius chalks up an other-worldly 89 miles-per-gallon. And drivers might just be able to get that kind of mileage, too—provided they cruise at an average speed of 16 miles an hour, as in the Japanese test. (Memo to Florida’s Gray Coast: This is the car for you.) Under the more rigorous Japanese standards that will prevail by 2015, the new Prius slips a little—to a mere 76 miles-per-gallon. The new Japanese fuel-economy test seeks to replicate more real-world driving, and does include a burst of speed, but has an even lower average speed. In the U.S., the Environmental Protection Agency’s revised fuel-economy standards give the 2010 Prius a combined 50 miles-per-gallon—a step up from the already-impressive 2009 Prius, but obviously worlds worse than the Japanese test. The new U.S. test, which Edmunds calls a “reliable indicator” of real-world driving habits, includes such mileage-wrecking behavior as sudden starts and driving with the A/C on full blast. All the different fuel-economy numbers are misleading in a way—every driver has different habits that mean your mileage truly will vary. But those headline numbers still matter a lot as the battle for fuel-economy leadership is heating up. And while the under-$20,000 Honda Insight made a big splash this year, it may not stay a two-horse race—if bankruptcy court doesn’t interfere with an American comeback. General Motors is still banking on the electric Chevy Volt to revitalize its fortunes, even if it’s not clear it will be a money-maker. And Chrysler now has a battery maker—Massachusetts-based A123 Systems—for its suite of five electric vehicles.
