Shell boss Jeroen van der Veer takes the long view, which spells a supply crunch and rising oil prices. The recession will only exacerbate that by postponing crucial investment now, he says in a video interview with the FT. Speaking of which, Gazprom will pare back upstream investment as demand for natural gas plummets, in the WSJ. Will the Chevy Volt ever be commercially viable? It all depends on the batteries, at MIT Technology Review. One thing’s for certain—with the administration in charge of automotive policy, the Volt will be politically viable at least, in Planet Gore. Just what is the administration’s gestalt view of energy and climate policy? The WaPo ties it all together, from the push for energy indpendence to the quest to fight global warming. But energy independence from what exactly? asks Fareed Zakaria, also in the WaPo. Meeting the energy global challenge will require an all-of-the-above approach to new energy sources, he says. The Waxman-Markey energy and climate bill really, really likes carbon offsets, which would be good news for business and bad news for enviros. Common Tragedies crunches the numbers. The British government again comes under fire for slow-footing new energy and climate policy, but this time the attacks come from the business lobby, in The Guardian. The timing may be important: An ice shelf the size of Connecticut is about to fall off Antarctica, also in The Guardian. Or maybe the size of Jamaica; video at the Huffington Post. What’s clear is that a few years of cooling temperatures don’t invalidate the trend toward global warming, at Dot Earth. President Obama’s plan for a global nuclear-fuel bank to power civilian reactors has a candidate: Kazakhstan has volunteered and the administration is “seriously” considering it, in the WSJ. Just how important is nuclear power to the clean-energy mix? Japan’s manufacturing emissions are set to rise in the middle of the recession, because its biggest nuclear plant is still offline, in Reuters. Finally, just in time for Opening Day, Scientific American offers a full lineup of the science of baseball, from why corked bats are a mixed blessing (better for contact, worse for power) to the physics behind a four-seam fastball.
