Chrysler rides Fiat to the rescue at the New York auto show—literally, in the WSJ Auto Blog. China’s electric-car dreams get a boost from a new deal with Nissan, also in the WSJ. But Detroit’s green makeover will require more than just a new lineup of fuel-sipping vehicles—gasoline prices have to rise a lot and stay there, notes the L.A. Times. How uphill is the Congressional battle over climate legislation? Health-care reform is further along. For now, the House still hopes to pass an energy and climate package by May, while the Senate just hopes to pass something this year, in the WaPo. To smooth that ride in the Senate, the Obama administration hints it might be willing to give away some of the emissions permits, in the WSJ and the WaPo. Still, U.S. progress is too slow for the global climate crowd, and misgivings abound at a big UN conference in Germany, the NYT reports. Developing countries are coming along, though—Mexico says it’s toying with an emissions cap for sectors like oil, cement, and utilities, in Bloomberg. Of course, capping emissions raises electricity prices—which has folks in coal-dependent Missouri horrified, reports the NYT: “We want to help our grandchildren,” one resident said. “My problem is that the brunt of the improvement is going to be put on the backs of those who can’t afford it.” Australians are also horrified—by the present-day ravages of climate change, which have led to years of drought, wildfires, and new diseases in a grim harbinger of things to come. Suicides, the L.A. Times reports, are rampant. Not that there’s much fresh momentum for renewable energy Down Under—Reuters reports on the stuttering Australian solar sector. Or maybe it’s just the economy—Japan reinstated solar subsidies and no one wants them, in Greentech Media. Some renewable-energy economics do look dire; promoters of the huge London Array offshore wind farm are now pleading for funding from the EU investment bank, in The Guardian and The Times. A death foretold—ethanol maker Aventine files for bankruptcy, in the WSJ. Not that it’s all grim news. A Manhattan Project veteran finds a way to potentially slash the cost of geothermal by 50%, by using super-heated water instead of drill bits, in Grist. Then there’s clean coal. France’s Total kicks off the first burn-to-bury retrofit of an existing gas plant, the first baby step toward making fossil fuels cleaner-burning, in The Guardian. Finally, the electricity grid is indeed still vulnerable to cyber attacks, regulators say, and has been for at least the past decade, in the WaPo.
